Nikkah, Mayon and Walima Cakes: A Pakistani Wedding Cake Guide
Western wedding planning assumes one cake. A Pakistani shaadi does not work that way. Between the nikkah, mayon, mehndi, baraat and walima there can be five separate functions across a week, each with its own colour scheme, its own guest list and its own photographs. Planning the cakes together — rather than panic-ordering each one three days out — is cheaper, calmer and produces a far more coherent set of images.
The cake for each function
- Nikkah — white, ivory or soft pastel; floral detail or Urdu calligraphy of the couple's names
- Mangni or engagement — smaller, one or two tiers, ring and heart motifs
- Mayon — yellows, marigold orange and green, echoing the haldi
- Mehndi — the boldest of the set: deep greens, mirror work, dholki and dhol motifs
- Baraat — richer and more ornate, gold leaf, jewel tones
- Walima — the formal centrepiece, usually the tallest and most structured
Sizing: serve the room, photograph the cake
The most useful trick in wedding cake planning is separating the cake you photograph from the cake you serve. A four-tier display cake sized to feed 300 guests is enormously expensive. A three or four tier cake sized for the stage, cut ceremonially, and backed up by sheet cakes portioned in the kitchen gives identical photographs at a fraction of the cost.
- 30 to 50 guests — 2 tiers, 6 to 8 lb, roughly Rs 12,000 to 20,000
- 60 to 100 guests — 3 tiers, 10 to 14 lb, roughly Rs 22,000 to 40,000
- 120 to 200 guests — 4 tiers, 16 to 22 lb, roughly Rs 45,000 to 75,000
- Display cake plus sheet cakes — 3 to 4 dummy tiers, from about Rs 18,000
Dummy tiers are not cheating
Polystyrene tiers finished exactly like real ones are standard practice at large weddings worldwide. The cake looks full height on the stage, the couple cuts a real tier, and the rest of the room is served from cake cut out of sight. Nobody in the photographs can tell, and the saving is substantial.
Flavours across tiers
Different tiers can carry different flavours at no additional structural cost. With a large mixed guest list this is worth doing — a chocolate tier, a vanilla or caramel tier, and one premium flavour such as Lotus Biscoff or Red Velvet covers most preferences. Ask for a tasting before you finalise; it is the only reliable way to choose.
A realistic booking timeline
- Two to three months out — enquire, agree budget and overall style
- One month out — tasting, final design sign-off, deposit paid
- One week out — confirm guest numbers, venue access and setup time
- On the day — delivery, on-site assembly, and a stability check before the team leaves
Book earlier than feels necessary if your wedding falls between November and February, or near Eid. Those are the weeks when every bakery in Lahore is at capacity for large tiered cakes, and the good slots go first.
Venue realities worth planning for
Tell your baker the stage height, whether the hall is air-conditioned, and what time you can access the venue for setup. Hot stage lighting is unkind to buttercream, and a cake that looked perfect at 6 PM can be sagging by 9 PM under the wrong lamps. These are solvable problems, but only if the baker knows about them in advance.
