Barat Cake: Do You Need One, and What Should It Look Like?

Of the main wedding functions, the barat is the one where a cake is least expected. That is changing at Lahore weddings, especially where the nikkah takes place on the barat day and the couple has a moment on stage, but it is still a choice rather than a convention, and worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Barat or walima: which one gets the cake
The bride's family hosts the barat and the groom's family hosts the walima, so the two cakes are usually ordered by different sides. If both families plan a tiered cake, the photographs will show two very similar centrepieces a day apart. Many couples put the large cake at the walima and either skip the barat cake or keep it small. Agree this between the families early.

What it should look like
The barat is the bride's day in red, so cakes in deep red, maroon and gold sit naturally beside the bridal outfit, as do ivory cakes with red roses. Fondant is the usual finish because barat halls are crowded and warm and the cake will stand through a long photography session. Florals can be piped, sugar or fresh; fresh flowers are added on the day.
