Behind the Scenes: How Cake The Great Makes Custom Cakes
Short answer
A custom cake is made in five stages: understanding the design, baking the sponge fresh, filling and crumb-coating, decorating, then a final quality check before it leaves. Nothing is made from stock. That is why a buttercream cake needs 1-2 days, custom fondant 3-4 days and a 3D sculpted cake 5-7 days.
Every custom cake that leaves our bakery on MM Alam Road, Lahore carries hours of skilled work — work that happens long before the candles are lit. We get a lot of questions about how we actually make our cakes, so we decided to pull back the curtain and walk you through the complete process from order to delivery.
Step 1 — Understanding Your Vision
Every custom cake starts with a conversation. When you place an order online or through WhatsApp, our team reviews every detail: the design, weight, flavour, occasion, and any reference photos you send. For complex designs, we might reach out for clarification or suggest design alternatives if something is not technically feasible.
Step 2 — Baking the Sponge
We bake fresh for every order — never frozen, never pre-baked in bulk. Our bakers begin with the sponge layers, carefully measuring ingredients and following precise baking times to achieve the correct texture and moisture level. Different flavours have different formulations: our Lotus Biscoff sponge, for example, has crushed biscuits folded into the batter.
Step 3 — Filling and Crumb Coating
Once cooled, the layers are sliced, filled with the chosen flavour cream, and stacked. A thin 'crumb coat' of frosting is applied all over the cake to seal in crumbs, then the cake chills for at least 1 hour before the final frosting layer is applied.
Step 4 — Decoration
This is where the artistry happens. Fondant is kneaded, coloured, rolled, and applied. Sugar flowers are handcrafted petal by petal. Edible gold leaf is applied with a fine brush. Buttercream is piped in rosettes or swirled in ombre gradients. A detailed design can take 4–6 hours of decoration alone.
Step 5 — Quality Check and Packaging
Before any cake leaves our bakery, it goes through a quality check: correct name, correct design, correct weight, clean finish. It is then packaged in a purpose-built cake box with insert supports to prevent movement during transport.

Order a Custom CakeFrequently Asked Questions
- Are the cakes baked fresh or kept in stock?
- Baked to order, which is why lead times exist at all. A bakery that can hand you any design immediately is selling from a display fridge, and the difference in a sponge that has been sitting for two days is noticeable.
- Why does a sculpted cake take five to seven days?
- Most of that time is waiting rather than working. The sponge has to be baked, chilled, carved, crumb-coated and chilled again before fondant goes on, and each chill has to finish before the next step can start.
- Can I see a photo before the cake is delivered?
- Yes. We send a photo before the cake leaves the bakery, which matters most when you are ordering for someone else or from overseas and will not see it yourself.
